NEW YORK (Reuters) - Privately held Mobile Satellite Ventures will not bid in an upcoming U.S. government wireless airwaves auction but could partner with an auction participant, chairman Gary Parsons said on Monday.
"We will definitely not be bidding," Parsons, who is also chairman of XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc XMSR.O, said at the Reuters Media Summit in New York.
He would not rule out a partnership with an auction participant for use of the spectrum, but would not comment on specific partners for Mobile Satellite Ventures, a provider of two-way radio services and mobile data services via satellite for users in isolated areas.
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission is planning to auction valuable airwaves in the 700-megahertz spectrum band starting January 24. Potential bidders, which could include Web search leader Google Inc (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) as well as incumbent wireless operators, have a December 3 deadline to apply to participate.
