Top Takeaways for 2021
After testing 20 online sportsbooks for our 2021 review, here are our top findings on Betfred:
- The sports, bets, and promotions Betfred offers are different depending on which state you’re wagering from. But none of the offerings are as comprehensive and consistent as the array bettors can find at competitors like DraftKings, FanDuel, or PointsBet.
- Only Colorado residents currently have access to Betfred’s mobile app. Pennsylvania residents must use the WindCreek app, while Iowa residents are limited to Betfred’s mobile website.
- Betfred offers no educational content for users who are new to sports betting. That’s a big oversight.
Supported states: Colorado, Iowa and Pennsylvania
Testing note: Betfred has different sports betting products in each state it services. That’s highly unusual in the sports betting world. For this review, we tested Betfred’s Colorado and Iowa offerings. Here are the Betfred products available in each of the states in which it operates:
- Colorado: Residents of Colorado can use both the Betfred Colorado app and the Betfred website to bet on sports.
- Iowa: The Betfred website is the only option for sports bettors in Iowa. There is no mobile app available.
- Pennsylvania: The Betfred mobile app available for residents of Pennsylvania is under the name “WindCreek.”

Prop bets: Betfred offers an average variety of prop bets (10 to 30) for most games and sports. An examples of prop bets: “Will Jeremy Lamb score over or under 12.5 points?” or “Will Domantas Sabonis record over or under 5.5 assists?”
Daily odds boosts: Odds boosts are another online betting app basic. Betfred Colorado and Pennsylvania calls odds boosts “Betfred Boosts.” Here’s how odds boosts work: If you boosted the odds of Manchester City and Leicester City to both win from +105 to +125, you would win $1.25 instead of $1.05 for every $1 you wagered. Betfred Iowa does not provide daily odds boosts.
As denoted by the table below, Betfred offers good odds on NCAAF moneyline bets. For comparison, if average NCAAF moneyline odds on a team are +130 at other sports betting sites, Betfred might offer odds at +140. In this example, every dollar wagered would return $1.40 at Betfred versus $1.30 at other sites.
Meanwhile, Betfred offers below average odds on NHL total bets, NBA total bets, and NFL moneyline bets. For comparison, if average NHL total odds on a team are -110 at other sports betting sites, Betfred might offer odds at -115. In this example, every dollar wagered would return $.87 at Betfred versus $.91 at other sites.

Methodology: To score Odds, Moneyline.com gathered data from 20 sportsbooks over five months. For our 2021 Sportsbook Review, over 34,000 data points were collected for spread, moneyline, and over/under (bets).
Leagues and bet types collected include NCAA football moneyline bets, NCAA basketball moneyline bets, NFL moneyline, spread and total bets, NBA spread, moneyline and total bets, NHL moneyline, puckline and total bets, and soccer 3-way result (moneyline) bets. When collecting odds, we made sure to collect the same games at the same time for each sportsbook, ensuring data accuracy.
While there is nothing that makes live betting at Betfred unusable, the experience during our testing left us unimpressed. While all basic live bet types are available, the lack of instant bets or a live match tracker (at Betfred Iowa) makes Betfred second fiddle to sportsbooks such as FanDuel or BetRivers.
Betfred Colorado: Live betting at Betfred Colorado includes a live match tracker for sports such as NFL football and NBA basketball. For NFL football, the live match tracker shows the team's down and distance with the ball and the current score, and all timestamps of points scored thus far. Instant bets — like betting on the result of an NFL drive — are not available.
Betfred Iowa: Betfred Iowa does not feature a live match tracker (it does provide a running clock), has almost no instant bets and does not offer live streaming.
Betfred Pennsylvania: Betfred Pennsylvania features a live match tracker, but does not feature any instant bets or live streaming, and is ultimately average.
Betfred Mobile App
The Betfred mobile app is available only in Colorado, forcing Iowa and Pennsylvania users to use the desktop website. The Betfred Colorado app is pretty standard, but a few usability issues pull down its rating.
Betfred Colorado: The Betfred Colorado app makes it easy to search for different sports, place bets, and view in-play games. That said, finding your way to promotions in the app requires some hunting and pecking. (FYI: They’re behind the “All Sports” button.) While this may seem like a minor issue, most other sportsbooks make promotions a lot easier to find. Also, when you hit customer support in the Colorado app, you are taken on an annoying detour to the Betfred website.
Betfred Iowa: Betfred does not currently have a mobile app available in Iowa. Residents must use the desktop version of the site. While the desktop version of Betfred is sufficient, not having an app is a big drawback. For Iowa sportsbooks with fully functional mobile apps, check out William Hill, or PointsBet.
Betfred Pennsylvania (aka WindCreek): The Pennsylvania mobile offering (you’ll find it under WindCreek in the App Store) is average at best. I found navigating to different menus to be more difficult than it should be. Also, the app defaults to opening in the casino section of the app, as opposed to sports betting.
Betfred is one of the only sportsbooks I’ve seen that offers absolutely no educational content or statistics. You won’t find even simple definitions of betting terms or explanations of betting types. Given Betfred’s history as an established global brand, I’m shocked.
Due to the lack of education, I would not recommend Betfred to sports betting newcomers. For better education, see our guides on how to read odds, different bet types, and understanding bonus rollovers.
Bonuses & Promotions
Bettors will find a solid slate of promotions at Betfred Colorado. It’s a completely different story at Betfred Iowa, which, during our test period, lagged top competitors across the board in this category.
Colorado: Betfred offers new customers a risk-free bet up to $500. When this review was written in December, Betfred also featured a “12 Days of Christmas” promotion. It matched a user’s first bet up to $50 on each of the 12 promotional days and was one of the more unique promotions I’ve seen.
Iowa: Betfred offers Iowa residents a 100% first wager match up to $200. Here’s how it works: If you create an account and bet $100 on an NFL game, Betfred will credit your account with another $100. When this review was written in December, this was the only promotion Betfred offered, making it pretty stingy compared to promotions at other Iowa sportsbooks such as PointsBet.
Pennsylvania: A 100% deposit match up to $400 is available for new customers in Pennsylvania. The handful of ongoing promotions are all centered around casino games, with no additional sports betting promos.
Betfred has essentially three different sportsbooks for the three states it currently serves. Yet none of them have enough gas in their tanks to catch up to industry-leading sportsbooks like DraftKings, FanDuel, or PointsBet. For a wider variety of bets and promotions, a superior mobile betting experience, and education for first-time bettors, our money is on the competition.
Betfred is a global gambling company founded in 1967 and based in the U.K. According to Wikipedia, the company’s turnover in 2018-2019 was more than £10 billion. In 2020 Betfred USA launched sports betting products in the U.S., starting with Colorado, Iowa, and Pennsylvania.

For Moneyline.com’s annual best online sportsbooks review, we collected more than 36,000 data points over five months from 20 sportsbooks that serve 11 states where full-scale mobile betting is legalized. Hundreds of hours were spent testing and scoring each sportsbook (mobile and online/desktop) in seven core categories: sports and bets offered, odds, live betting, mobile betting, education, ease of use, and bonuses and promotions. The results determined each sportsbook’s overall rating.
Data from more than 1,700 bets (including moneyline, spread and total bets) was used to generate each sportsbook’s comparative odds ranking.
About Moneyline.com’s chief sportsbook researcher, Joey Shadeck: I’ve been a hobby sports bettor for more than six years, placing hundreds of bets on my favorite sports (football, basketball, MMA) and teams (Packers, Spartans, and whoever is playing the Lions). Beyond sports betting, I’m known for saying “Wanna bet on it?” in almost any situation and that is how I found out I can eat 42 chicken nuggets in less than 20 minutes.
As of February 2021, 22 different states have legalized sports betting to some capacity. Of those 22 states, the following 11 have legalized full-scale mobile betting: Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada (must register in-person), New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia.
